The Fiercest Weapon

“Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.” – James 3:5
I have been doing some thinking lately about the awesome power of the tongue. Have you ever stopped to really ponder what a humbling and somewhat frightening privilege it is to have such incredible power and influence over each other as an inherent part of our identity?
While it is certainly exciting to think that in just minutes we have the power to turn someone’s bad day into a good one with a few simple words (such as “I love you” or “God bless you”) it should also frighten us a little bit that we likewise possess the power to turn someone’s good day into a bad day with equal speed.
Our tongue can be our fiercest weapon, or our greatest tool. The choice is entirely ours.
It is indescribably important that we guard our tongue at all costs. Jesus said that if part of our body causes us to stumble we should cut it off. Of course He was being figurative! – and His point was simply that nothing should be allowed to hinder us from following God.
Today, try complimenting your coworker on their new outfit, telling your pastor tonight at Bible study that you appreciate his sermons, or saying something, anything, uplifting, to those you encounter today. Don’t flatter – just be honest. I assure you that if you look hard enough, you’ll find SOMETHING nice to say! 😉
